The Indian Head Penny was struck from 1859-1909. The Indian Head Penny was originally designed not as an Indian Head on the obverse, but as Lady Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. The Indian Head Penny was designed by James B. Longacre. It is composed of .880 copper and .120 nickel for years 1859-1864 and is called the Indian Head Copper Nickel. In the later part of 1864, the composition was changed. From 1864-1909 the Indian Head Penny was then composed of .950 copper and .050 tin and zinc. This is the bronze Indian Head Penny.
