The Buffalo Nickel was designed by James E. Fraser, and it was struck from 1913 through 1938. The Buffalo Nickel is also known as the Bison Nickel and the Indian Head Nickel. The Buffalo Nickel was struck in two varieties in 1913. The 1913 Type I portrays the buffalo on a mound, and the 1913 Type II portrays more of a line and separation under the buffalo. The Buffalo Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the Denver Mint. Along with the 1913 S "Type II" Buffalo Nickel, there are many rare, sought after dates and varieties such as the 1916 Double Die Obverse, the 1918 8 over 7, and the ever so sought after 1937 D Three Legged Buffalo Nickel. The Buffalo Nickel was discontinued in 1938 and replaced with the Jefferson Nickel.
