The Morgan Silver Dollar, composed of .900 silver and .100 copper, was minted from 1878-1904. After coinage of the Silver Dollar was suspended from 1904-1921 due to a shortage in silver supply, the mint resumed minting the Morgan Dollar in 1921. The bullion supply had become so exhausted, under the Pittman act of 1918, 270,232,722 silver dollars were melted to help with the low supply of silver. The Morgan Silver Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan. George T. Morgan was a former pupil of William Wyon, in the Royal Mint in London. Morgan’s initials can be found in two locations on the Morgan Dollar. It is can be found on the obverse, located on Liberty’s neck, and it can also be found on the reverse on the left hand top of the ribbon.
