Description

Rare U.S. Nickels (1866 to date) were introduced after the success of the 2 cent and 3 cent coins, the first design being the Shield Nickel (1866-1883). The design and production of the Shield Nickel caused many problems at the mint, and it was consequently replaced by the Liberty Head (1883-1912). The Indian Head (1913-1938), also known as the Buffalo Nickel, was struck after President Roosevelt criticized previous designs. The Jefferson Nickel (1938 to date) rounds out the collection of U.S. nickels. Key differentiators among rare U.S. nickels include rays between stars and repunched dates (Shield Nickels), the presence of “CENTS” (Liberty Head), and the raised or recessed “FIVE CENTS” (Indian Head). For the Jefferson Nickel, there are a variety of reverse designs to seek, including Monticello, Peace Medal, American Bison, and others.
